곤살로 폰세카는 2021년 포르투갈 세이라(Ceira)강의 입구부터 강의 근원지가 있는 세라 두 아소르(Serra do Acor) 산의 꼭대기 까지를 걸었다. 그는 이 지역 출신이었던 가족과 이곳을 진심으로 사랑했던 이들을 세 명이나 잃었다. 이를 계기로 그는 소유와 자아, 상실이라는 주제를 탐험하는 여정을 떠났다. 곤살로의 사진은 허구와 현실, 추억과 꿈 사이의 어딘가를 걷고 있는 듯하다. 그는 가족의 뿌리를 기록하면서 여전히 이 지역을 포기하지 않고 살아가는 다양한 사람들의 모습을 담았다.

 

곤살로 폰세카는 2020년 라이카 오스카 바르낙 어워드 신인상을 수상했다.

 

The river Ceira is a small and pure mountain river, only 100 km long. Tucked away in Portugal’s heartland, it passes through some forgotten cities and villages, places that have struggled to maintain their vibrancy in the 21st. century. 

In 2021, I decided to begin a journey by foot, from the mouth of the river to its’ source, high up the mountains of Serra do Ac?or. Propelled by the loss of three family members, who either were from the region or loved it with all their hearts, I set myself on a route to explore photographically issues of belonging, identity, and loss. With photographs that walk the line between fiction and reality, memory and dream, I ed my family’s roots and photographed the lives of different people who still resist the abandonment of this area.

Goncalo Fonseca 곤살로 폰세카

Goncalo Fonseca (b. 1993) is a ary photographer based in Lisbon, Portugal, that specializes on intimate and long term projects. 

 

In his early teens, he developed a passion for capturing those crucial moments of time, where you could see life pulsating if you looked carefully. Later he discovered the power of storytelling and journalism. He commits himself tirelessly to shed light on under-reported topics and to amplify the voices of those he photographs. Since 2017 he has worked on long term projects in Portugal, China and India.

 

Recently, his ongoing body of work New Lisbon won the Leica Oskar Barnak Award - Newcomer. He was a finalist in “Community Awareness Award” at the 78th Pictures of the Year International in 2021 and selected for the Eddie Adams Workshop XXXIV. Goncalo’s others distinctions include the Yunghi Grant 2020 (US), the  Estacao Imagem Award - Daily Life 2020 (PT), the Photographic Allard Prize for International Integrity 2019 (CAN) and Young Talent at the Educating the Eye Award 2019 (ES). He is a member of Photographic Social Vision and a photography educator at “Pelos Teus Olhos” in Chelas, Lisbon.
